The next morning, on our way down to Monterey, we stopped by Golden Gate National Cemetery to put flowers on my grandparent's gravesite: Harold and Irene Cloughley. The cemetery is in San Bruno, south of San Francisco, not by the Golden Gate Bridge or Golden Gate Park as you might expect. This is the view of the National Cemetery from the diner we breakfasted at. |

CMM stands for Chief Machinist Mate. My grandfather served as Chief Petty Officer in both World Wars. |

Whenever I visit my grandparents, I also visit the graves of the U.S. Navy's great World War II leaders. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz is here along with Admirals Raymond A. Spruance, Richmond K. Turner, and Charles A. Lockwood, by an arrangement made by all of them while living.
Nimitz was the commander of the Pacific Fleet for all four years against Japan in World War II.
|
||||||
Spruance was the victor of Midway, and alternated with Halsey command of the great seagoing Pacific fleet the last two years of the war.

We stopped by Eagle Park, where old Mountain View High School used to be. I wanted to show Lynnette the memorial to the 1975 Central Coast Section Football Championship that Mountain View won and I was a member of. Joe and I were here back in December for the dedication ceremony.
Lynnette liked the memorial on a beautiful California day.
I was glad to see the eagle and placard looked as good as they day they were unveiled.
